Phonographs and gramophones

In the Department of Music and Audiovisual of the BNE we find one of the most important historical collections of recording and reproduction devices and sound recordings in Spain, a true reflection of the history of the Spanish phonographic edition.

The progressive appearance of new media has undoubtedly contributed to the improvement of the recording quality, both of sound and of the human voice from the fragile and primitive wax cylinders. The National Library of Spain preserves testimonies of each of these documentary mediums, which is proof of the enormous wealth of the collection that it guards.

Due to the special nature of these reproduction devices, the Music and Audiovisual Department manages, in collaboration with the BNE Museum, the complex cataloguing of a wide range of reproduction devices, in perfect working order. In the same way that the enrichment of the collection of the different supports is promoted, the increase of the reproduction apparatuses is necessary. The purpose is, first of all, to guarantee the existence of an original player that allows to rescue the information of each of the supports. Therefore, the conservation of this type of objects is a primary task.
